Scrum Master Training

IMG_20140710_103924-SMILEI believe being a Scrum Master is all about helping teams and improving teams. The Scrum framework is not difficult, just 11 pages (without intro and index) to describe Scrum. Being a good Scrum Master is all about leadership, change management, being able to organize inspiring retrospectives, etc.

The training is two consecutive days. During these two days attendees will learn all about Scrum and it will prepare them to become a Scrum Master. The training is a combination of theory and hands-on exercises.

Day 1

  1. Scrum Theory and Principles: How do Scrum principles tie back to the empirical nature of Scrum and how are these fundamentally different from those of more traditional software development approaches. We will also cover the impact that transparency brings and requires and how Scrum is best used to increase an organisation’s agility.
  2. People and Teams: Scrum Teams are self-organizing and cross-functional – very different from traditional development groups. We dive into the people aspect of Scrum: how to work with people and how are Scrum Teams formed. We will discuss tools and ideas to get Scrum teams going and guide them along the way, and help them continuously self-develop to become successful through better collaboration.

Day 2

  1. Scrum Master: Scrum Masters are servant-leaders with skills and tools to coach teams and organisations in understanding and applying Scrum. They master several techniques for coaching, conversation and facilitation in order to help people, teams and organisations discover what works best for them. Being a Scrum Master requires specific skills and traits. The overall behavior of a Scrum Master is very different from a project manager or team leader in a traditional environment.
  2. Scrum Simulation: We will close the workshop by doing a simulation game where all the topics will come together and where the students really experience what Scrum is. The students will encounter the pitfalls all new Scrum teams and Scrum Master encounter. The goal is to learn from the pitfalls and be able to recognize them when they will popup in the real world.

During these two days the following topics will be covered:

  • Definition of Scrum
  • Scrum Theory
  • The Scrum Team
    • The Product Owner
    • The Development Team
    • The Scrum Master
  • Scrum Events
    • The Sprint
    • Sprint Planning
    • Daily Scrum
    • Sprint Review
    • Sprint Retrospective
  • Scrum Artifacts
    • Product Backlog
    • Sprint Backlog
    • Increment
  • Artifact Transparency
    • The definition of “Done”

Certification

The training prepares the students for the Professional Scrum Master I certification of Scrum.org. Students who pass PSM I and achieved certification demonstrate an intermediate understanding of the Scrum framework.
