What is #Workout?
When an organization’s culture is bad, don’t just blame the managers. Management of an organization is everyone’s responsibility. Better management means engaging people, improving the whole system, and increasing value for clients. For most people, however, these principles are not enough. They need concrete practices, or, in other words, regular workout exercises.
That’s how management guru Jurgen Appelo kicks off his third book, #Workout:Games, Tools and Practices to Engage people, Improve Work, and Delight Clients. Who should attend a #Workout Workshop?
We call this book and management coaching style a #Workout because it’s just that, something that you have to keep adapting to your needs every day (or else you’ll just sit on the sofa and nothing will get better.) For example, imagine you love swimming but travel around a lot for work. Without a portable swimming pool, you need to adapt your exercise routine for the tools you have – in this case, your trainers – so you run. Management 3.0 is all about offering you actionable ways to increase employee engagement and team collaboration by finding the right routine for your team.
This also means that each Workshop is different, adapting to the different attendees’ sectors and needs. Do I need to attend the two-day Management 3.0 Workshop first?
It’s recommended but not necessary to attend a two-day Management 3.0 Workshop first. Both sets of workshops discuss similar topics — the definition of leadership and how it can fit into the future of management — but approach it in different ways with completely different material. The two-day workshop helps take agile management practices beyond software development to mainstream management, and #Workout takes it further by allowing you and fellow managers to play games and apply best practices together that you can then take back to your office.
Do I need to read #Workout before attending?
Everybody does it differently. Some feel more prepared by having read #Workout before attending, while others want to come to the #Workout Workshop with a completely blank slate and then dive into the book afterward. Many but not all of the exercises found in the book are implemented at the one-day workshop, as well as not all of the exercises from the Workshop are found in the book. Certainly, both complement each other and are filled with actionable management insights. Similarly, Jurgen’s first book Management 3.0 and #Workout address the same issues in different ways. Reading the books beforehand may lead to deeper discussions and storytelling, but the best workshops have ample diversity of thought, so do what’s best for you.
