Structure of the Online Working Together Anywhere Workshop

The online workshop exists out of four sessions. Every session is 90 minutes and is highly interactive. The topics of the four sessions are:

  • Set Expectations for How to Work Together
  • Working Together Online
  • Have memorable online meetings
  • Manage Online Teams

Every session has some theory, exercises, and looking back at the previous weeks. At the end of every session, you decide what you would like to try out for the next session. By doing this, you can directly try out the things you learn during the workshop.

We piloted the Work Together Anywhere workshop with several teams at Rabobank. I can see a difference between the teams who took the workshop and the teams that didn’t. Teams who followed the workshop are having more effective remote stand-up meetings, retrospectives, and planning sessions.

Robbert Windsant (Scrum master at Rabobank)

Session 1 – Set expectations for how to work together

Avoid miscommunications and outline acceptable behaviors for how your team wants to work together.

Having people working together does not automatically mean they are a team. Everyone in a team has her or his own experiences, strengths, weaknesses, preferred way of working, etc. It is important in a remote team to make sure all team members are on the same page. In this session, you lean how to give your team the kick-off they need to become successful!

You will learn:

  • How to establish a basic set of guidelines for working together on a remote team
  • Common communication protocols for remote working
  • Tools for capturing team agreements

Session 2 – Working together online

Increase the feeling of togetherness on your remote team by creating a productive and enjoyable virtual workspace.

One of the biggest disadvantages of working in remote teams is the feeling of loneliness. Also, the lack of communication is a big problem. We all know communication is important but still, we don’t get it well. In this session, you will learn how to help the team to be close together, communicate well, keep connected to each other.

Session 3 – Facilitate online meetings like a pro

Learn how to set up and facilitate virtual team meetings to get the most engagement and interaction from your team.

Many of you have experienced a remote meeting where you could not hear and/or see your colleagues. Tools that were not working. People talking at the same time. In this session, we look at how to get great remote meetings.

You will learn:

  • How to choose and effectively use online meeting technology
  • Common communication protocols for effective remote meetings
  • How to facilitate interaction and participation, and minimize distractions and multi-tasking

After the workshop, our teams started experimenting with how to best have productive meetings with in-person and remote attendees. I also scheduled virtual lunches with people and made some new personal connections with a couple of teammates.
